Birch mushroom(chaga) - what is it?

Chaga - sunken hole or black birch mushroom is widespread in the forests of Eastern and Northern Europe, growing on tree trunks forming a cone-shaped outgrowth. Reminiscent of a woody growth or nodule on a tree that looks like a lump of burnt coal, about 25-38cm in size. However, the orange inside of the mushroom (trama) is quite soft. The color of the trama is bright orange, reminiscent of the pattern of a tiger's fur, which is curled under black like a mushroom.

All claims about the benefits of this mushroom are based on scientific articles.

In many Eastern European myths, birch is mentioned in stories as the tree of life and fertility, because of the triterpenoids betulin and betulinic acid found in the bark. It was thought that chaga obtains betulinic acid from birch, but current research shows that chaga growing on a rice substrate also has it.

Betulinic acid is characterized by mitochondrial apoptosis-promoting action in tumors of various types of cancer. Other important components of I.obliquus  are polysaccharides and sterols. The high content of phenols provides exceptional antioxidant properties, and the melanin complex is not only an antioxidant, but also a genoprotective agent.

Clinical studies are growing that claim that Chaga mushroom can improve the ability to concentrate, learn and strengthen memory. Chaga mushroom can reduce malondialdehyde, nitrite the amount and activity of acetylcholinesterase, to restore the level of glutathione, superoxide dismutase and acetylcholine.

Chaga can help reduce the deposition of BETA amyloid proteins in the brain, so this particular mushroom may be useful in the treatment of progressive Alzheimer's disease.

Chaga is widely used as a folk medicine. In the Western world I.obliquus  is receiving increasing attention from medical practitioners due to its immunity-supporting polysaccharides and directly anti-cancer triterpenoids, especially betulinic acid.

In vitro research revealed high activity of betulinic acid against various types of cancer: melanoma, neuroectodermal (neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma) and malignant brain tumors, ovarian cancer, leukemia HL- 60 cells and malignant squamous cell cancers of the head and neck, including those that develop from treatment-resistant and refractory tumors.

Since melanoglucan complexes have strong antimicrobial activity, I.obliquus traditionally used as an internal cleanser in the form of Befungin, which is an alcoholic chaga extract. Here it is used to reduce stomach and intestinal disorders.

Several studies show the positive effect of I.obliquus against psoriasis. One such study conducted in Poland studied 50 patients. 76% of respondents reported recovery, 16% reported improvement. In the same study, it was found that the condition clearly improved within 9-12 weeks.

Traditionally I. obliquusis used in the fight against viral diseases. Aqueous chaga extract can prevent the Herpes simplex virus from entering the body by inhibiting the fusion of the virus with the body's cell membrane. At a concentration of only 3.82μg/ml of the aqueous extract, virus-induced fusion with the membrane is inhibited by as much as 50%. Betulinic acid analogs also demonstrated inhibitory effects on both intracellular replication of HIV-1 and its inducible fusion with the cell membrane.

Why čaga?

We searched for chaga mushroom for a long time, walked through a considerable number of forests in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, until we finally settled on several places and found the best suppliers. Our chaga comes directly from the people who harvest it themselves. We know where and under what conditions it grows, how it is collected. We are sure that no additives are added, the mushroom is unprocessed.

Our chaga comes from the forests of Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia, only from certified and organic producers.

Chaga is very difficult to reproduce or poison. There are no reports of adverse effects from an overdose of chaga. However, it is not recommended to use chaga more than 15 grams per day for a long time. The recommended dose can be used for a long period of time without interruption.

Dried mushroom powder should be stored in sealed plastic bags or glass containers in a cool, dry and dark place. Mushrooms dried in this way can be stored for 2 years or more.

Active ingredients in the forest

ANTIOXIDANTS:Chaga has been shown to be very high in antioxidants, molecules that can help remove free radicals from the body.

STEROLS: Sterols are important organic molecules found naturally in plants, animals and fungi. Inotodiol, lanosterol, betulin, betulinic acid, and ergosterol peroxide are triterpene sterols found in chaga mushrooms that have many health-promoting properties.

BETULINIC ACID: Betulin in birch is converted to betulinic acid by chaga and has been isolated from mushroom tissue. Betulinic acid may be the most important triterpene sterol found in chaga. It can be useful in supporting healthy immune system function, cell division, and the inflammatory response.

ADAPTOGENS: Adaptogens are substances that can help the body both physically and mentally adapt to stress and maintain balance. Chaga's adaptogenic properties can also increase physical and mental energy.

POLYSACCHARIDES: Polysaccharides are long-chain carbohydrate molecules that are found in high concentrations in wild chaga. Polysaccharides are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive and immune system.

BETA-GLUCANS:Beta-glucans are polysaccharides connected by beta-glycosidic bonds. Beta glucans can help support a healthy immune system response.

POLYPHENOLS: Polyphenols are molecules made up of multiple phenolic units. Chaga is rich in polyphenols, which may be beneficial for their antioxidant properties.

SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE:Chaga contains particularly high amounts of superoxide dismutase, an enzyme with strong antioxidant properties.
